Foundation Council
Sabine Plattner

Permanent Member

Sabine Plattner is a permanent member of the Foundation Council of the Hasso Plattner Foundation. She initiated Sabine Plattner African Charities (SPAC), a charitable subsidiary of the Foundation, and is one of the Founding Directors of Leadership for Conservation in Africa.

Following her career as a teacher in Germany and the establishment of SPAC gGmbH in 2008, she focused her attention on the biodiversity conservation in Africa. She believes that a harmonious coexistence between people and nature is desirable and achievable – provided it is driven by education. She is particularly dedicated to empowering younger generations through knowledge, enabling them to make informed decisions about their future.

Her work as a conservationist and educator spans several key areas. She has spearheaded Early Childhood Development (ECD) and EduConservation programs, initiatives that integrate conservation knowledge in primary school curricula across six African countries. Plans are underway to expand EduConservation into secondary level education. At the tertiary level, she supports international scientific research in primatology and the study of forest elephants within the Congo Basin.

A central focus of her conservation efforts is on the protection of African rainforests, particularly within the Congo Basin. She has dedicated time and resources to the ongoing preservation of Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Republic of Congo. Sabine Plattner considers the engagement and inclusion of local communities essential for conservation success, a principle reflected in the projects she supports in the region. Her philanthropic engagement in the Odzala-Kokoua plays a key role in fostering a sustainable balance between human livelihoods and environmental preservation.

As one of the Founding Directors and former Chair of Leadership for Conservation in Africa, Sabine Plattner actively promotes Public-Private Partnerships in conservation. Through her leadership and in keynote speeches, she encourages business leaders to support conservation programs.

In recognition of her contributions to conservation in the Congo Basin, she was awarded the Medal de Chevalier from the President of the Republic of Congo in 2019, as well as the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by the Federal President of Germany.
